Frequently asked questions
How to digitally sign a PDF with your Digital Signature Certificate.
How do I digitally sign a PDF with my DSC?
Open the PDF in a reader that supports digital signatures, choose the certificate-based signing option, select your DSC from the connected token, draw the signature box, and enter your token password to apply it.
What is the difference between a digital signature and an electronic signature on a PDF?
An electronic signature can be just a typed name or an image, while a DSC-based digital signature cryptographically binds your verified identity to the document and reveals any later change. The digital signature carries legal weight; a drawn image alone generally does not.
Why does my signed PDF say the signature validity is unknown?
That shows when the reader has not yet trusted the issuing Certifying Authority's root. Adding the CA chain to the reader's trusted identities, or enabling the India trust list, changes it to a validated signature.
Can I sign a PDF without Adobe Acrobat?
Yes. Several tools and portal utilities can apply a DSC to a PDF, and some Certifying Authorities provide their own PDF signer. The requirement is a tool that supports certificate-based token signing, not a particular brand.
Can I add a visible signature stamp as well as the digital signature?
Yes. While signing you can place a visible appearance, such as your name, date and reason, in a chosen spot while the cryptographic signature protects the whole file. The visible stamp is cosmetic; the cryptographic part proves authenticity.
